What is a sworn translation?
If a translation is sworn (in Italian traduzione giurata, also known as traduzione asseverata) it means that it has legal value. In fact, a sworn translation is an official translation of the certified, original document. A sworn translation must be authenticated by a public officer at an Italian court, or by a notary public, and it must be sworn by a sworn translator.
Who can translate documents?
A sworn translator, in Italian traduttore giurato, must be accredited by the local court or Chamber of Commerce in order for he or she to be able to work in Italy. All of our translators are accredited and can translate from multiple languages into Italian.
Which documents do you need to translate to apply for Italian citizenship?
All vital records such as birth, marriage, divorce, and death certificates, as well as naturalization documents issued in foreign languages must be translated into Italian. However, the type and the number of documents you need to translate is dependent on your specific case, which will be assessed by one of our experts.
What if these documents are issued by countries outside of the EU?

When do I need sworn translations?
Many consulates do not require certified translations; however, others such as the Italian consulate in Boston, require certified translations legalized with Apostilles. The same applies if you file your application at an Italian court or at an Italian municipality.
What is an Apostille?
An Apostille is a form of authentication that certifies the legal effectiveness of a document according to “The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirements of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents” of 1961. In the U.S., apostilles are issued by the Office of the Secretary of State in each state. Federal documents, on the other hand, are legalized by the U.S. Department of State.
How can translations be certified?
Translations can be certified:
1. by an Italian consulate aboard;
2. by a professional translator before an Italian court official;
3. by a professional translator before a public official abroad (a U.S. public notary, for instance)
4. by a professional translator before a Notary in Italy.
